Sumac Substitute

While sumac is a unique spice, some acceptable substitutes can replicate its tangy and citrusy flavor. Here are a few alternatives:

  • Lemon Zest: Freshly grated lemon zest provides a similar citrusy and zesty flavor. Use it sparingly, as it can be potent.
  • Lemon Pepper Seasoning: Lemon pepper seasoning blends lemon zest with black pepper. It offers a comparable tangy flavor to sumac.
  • Citrusy Herbs: A mix of dried thyme and oregano can provide a somewhat similar flavor profile, although it lacks the exact tartness of sumac.
  • Tamarind Paste: Tamarind paste, when used judiciously, can offer a tartness akin to that of sumac.
  • Vinegar: A dash of vinegar (white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar) can add acidity to dishes, but it’s not a perfect match for sumac’s distinct taste.
  • Za’atar: If you have za’atar, it’s a ready-made substitute for sumac, as it contains sumac along with other complementary herbs and spices.
  • Paprika: While it doesn’t replicate the tartness, paprika’s smoky and earthy flavor can add depth to your dishes when used as a sumac substitute. It will also add color.
