How Do You Clean an Enameled Dutch Oven?
An enameled Dutch oven can be one of your favorite and most used kitchen items. It’s generally easy to clean, comes in a variety of colors, and has many uses.
How Not to Clean an Enameled Dutch Oven
Do not use anything sharp or abrasive. Don’t use steel wool or any type of stainless steel scrubber that you would use on a cast-iron Dutch oven. These may chip the enamel coating, which can cause it to rust or even chip into your food. Although many manufacturers state they are dishwasher-safe, to keep your Dutch oven looking new, you should hand wash it.
How to Clean an Enameled Dutch Oven
A soft, non-abrasive sponge with soap should be all that is required for general cleaning. Wait until your pot is cool before washing. Always use a towel to completely dry it before storing or leave the pot on a drying rack.
If washing with soap and a sponge doesn’t quite get your pot clean, there are a few options.
Soak in Baking Soda
Fill your Dutch oven about halfway with water, or more if the sides are stained, bring to a boil over medium to medium-high heat, then mix in two to three tablespoons of baking soda. Let the mixture simmer for a couple of minutes, then turn off the heat. Cover and let it soak for about 15 minutes. Drain about half, and if needed, use a silicone or wooden spoon to remove any burnt-on bits. You can also drain all the water and use a plastic scraper. Let the pot cool before washing it with soap and water.
Baking Soda Paste
If you still have stubborn stains or bits that remain, make a baking soda paste. Combine one-part water to three parts baking soda. Rub small amounts of the paste with your fingers or a soft toothbrush over the stains. Cover and let sit for a few hours or overnight.
Wash with soap and hot water. The stains and bits should disappear. Rinse and wash again with soap and water to remove any remaining baking soda paste. Towel dry completely or leave the pot on a drying rack before storing it.
Bar Keepers Friend
If you’ve never used Bar Keepers Friend, you might want to consider buying some. Not only can you use it to easily clean your Dutch oven, but it also works on stainless steel, appliances, countertops, and more.
